To Top It All Off

Frosting is the star element of the cake. Its the part that is seen first so it HAS to look good, because as they say, you eat with yours eyes!

The way to get a good looking cake is the master the art of frostings. Once you've got it, you're good to go and experiment with colours and flavours all you want! The recipe I've found is simple and easy, best of all, nothing bad happens when I add additional ingredients such as flavourings or food colouring :) The only bad thing I have found is that when it says it is enough to top 12 cupcakes, it really isn't. I usually double to recipe in order to cover at least 15 cupcakes (I always land up making weird numbers). Other than that its pretty darn good.

For a simple vanilla butter cream frosting it goes a bit like this:

250g icing sugar, sifted
80g unsalted butter, at room temperature
25ml whole milk
a couple of drops of vanilla extract

  1. All you need to do is firstly blend the icing sugar and butter together. Then gradually add the milk and vanilla extract.
  2. Keep beating until light and fluffy then you're done!

Personally, I find piping butter cream, or any icing for that matter, the best way forward. Once you've got the knack of handling an icing bag and getting the patterns you want you cake make a cake look truly scrumptious!

There are so many kits these days that you can buy with all the different nossles so that you can get the perfect shape, along with instructions on how to use them the get the right design! Perfect!

When I pipe any cake, I use disposable plastic piping bags with my own nossles. It's so much easier as there's less hassle of not having to wash the bag out at the end ;) I'm all about quick and easy.

Go on give this recipe a go and leave me a comment on any tips and tricks to icing cakes
